There have been two schools of photography in Chinese photographic circles since the 1990's. One is contemporary art photography, also known as conceptual photography. Another is classic photography. For years, these two schools have been competing fiercely for the dominant position. In 2002, the argument broke out during the Pingyao International Photography Festival, which created tension between these two schools. However, today, the two schools co-exist peacefully. One embraces the other with passion, bith documentary images and vintage photographs have become the treasures in the art market.
As critics have said, the best way to appreciate photography is to make it art. This saying begs the question: has art appreciated photography, or hasphotography appreciated art?
